On the 5^th of September 2025, the serene grounds of Ofuobi Africa Centre, Enugu came alive as it hosted the highly anticipated 2025 Domestic Tourism Conference organized by Jands Travel Business School. The conference, themed “The Future of Domestic Tourism in Nigeria: Embracing our Arts and Culture“, was a two-day event that brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, tourism experts, cultural enthusiasts and passionate youths to explore ways of reviving and redefining domestic tourism in Nigeria.

Day One commenced at about 9:00 am with an opening prayer led by Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, the Founder Ofuobi African Centre. His prayer set a reflective tone for the event, calling for wisdom, unity and a renewed cultural consciousness among participants. Following this, Mrs. Chioma Obi, Director of Jands Travel Business School and Convener of the 2025 Domestic Tourism Conference Enugu, delivered a warm and inspiring welcome address. She emphasized the importance of domestic tourism as an engine for economic growth, job creation and cultural preservation in Nigeria.

Goodwill messages and the formal opening ceremony were delivered on behalf of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah, by Dame Barr. Ugochi Madueke, the Honorable Commissioner of FMACCE. Her address reflected the state government’s commitment to repositioning tourism as a cornerstone for development, while also highlighting the vast untapped potential of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

One of the most anticipated highlights of the day was the keynote address by Mr. Peter Obi, Former Governor of Anambra State, who spoke on the topic: “Where is Nigeria Going? Tourism, Culture, and the Future We Are Failing to Build.” His address was both thought-provoking and challenging, as he highlighted how neglecting domestic tourism limits Nigeria’s socio-economic development and weakens its cultural identity. He called on the youth to become active participants in reshaping the narrative of Nigeria’s tourism industry.

Equally impactful was the keynote session by Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, titled “Culture as a Compass: Reclaiming Values, Inspiring Change and Renewing Communities.” His presentation stirred the hearts of many as he reminded the audience that culture is not just entertainment but a moral compass that guides communities towards sustainable progress. He urged Nigerians to take pride in their heritage, harness their creativity, and create tourism experiences that reflect the nation’s authentic story.

The first day of the conference, centered on the sub-theme “Tourism in our DNA: Youth, Innovation, and the Future of Nigeria’s Culture,” provided a vibrant platform for youths and innovators to showcase ideas and propose actionable strategies for strengthening domestic tourism. The event marked not only a significant milestone for Ofuobi African Centre but also set the tone for a future where Nigeria’s domestic tourism can thrive through innovation, collaboration and cultural pride.
